NTU provost Christian Wolfrum has taken the helm as executive chairman of AI Singapore (AISG), the national programme driving the city-state's AI research and industry adoption. He succeeds Professor Ho Teck Hua, AISG's founding executive chairman since its establishment in 2017, who stepped down on Tuesday after leading the initiative through nearly a decade of growth.
Wolfrum brings a rare combination of academic leadership and AI ecosystem-building experience to the role. Currently serving as NTU's deputy president and provost, he previously spent years at ETH Zurich as vice president for research, where he was instrumental in establishing Switzerland's national AI institute and the Swiss AI initiative. The Ministry of Digital Development and Information and the National Research Foundation highlighted his "deep familiarity with Singapore's research, innovation and enterprise ecosystem" and his experience shaping AI research ecosystems globally.
The leadership change arrives as Singapore pushes forward with its National AI Strategy 2.0 ambitions. Under Ho's tenure, AISG delivered over 300 AI projects and trained close to 500 Singaporean AI engineers, building the programme into a cornerstone of the nation's AI ecosystem. Wolfrum described AISG's unique strength as "its position at the interface of academia and industry," where companies embed AI into their core operations, not as an add-on but as a fundamental capability. He warned that research without industry impact is incomplete, while industry without deep research is short-sighted — signalling a focus on closing that gap.
