Published on August 1, the guide walks through four academic scenarios — maths problem-solving, essay writing, research, and science comprehension — with specific prompts designed to keep the cognitive load on the student. Instead of asking AI to solve an algebra equation, students are coached to prompt: "Do not give me the answer. Ask me questions one at a time to help me identify the next step." For essays, the recommendation is to write a rough draft first, then ask AI to identify the weakest argument — not rewrite it. SUTD engineering student Anieyrudh R., 23, who contributed to the guide, emphasised that AI should be used to critique and challenge, not complete.

This comes on the heels of a companion ST piece warning about AI's potential to accelerate cognitive decline if used passively — describing what educators are calling the second wave of the AI debate. The Ministry of Education itself has launched a fund to study how AI can improve learning outcomes, signalling that the tension between AI access and genuine skill development is now a policy priority, not just a pedagogical debate.
