Standing in a high-visibility vest on the Downtown Line, Olly answers passenger queries and attempts to physically guide commuters to their desired exits — a practical test of how autonomous robots can handle the unpredictability of a busy MRT station.
The trial, running from August 31 to September 11 on weekdays between 10am and 12pm, sees Olly respond to a wake phrase and process natural-language questions about train schedules and directions. Early results have been mixed: simple queries about first and last trains came back accurately, but more complex requests like finding Tekka Centre produced delays and occasional mishearings. When asked for directions to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Olly correctly identified exit F and began physically walking commuters toward the fare gates.
What makes this trial significant is its grounding in real-world conditions rather than a controlled lab environment. Commuters at Little India brought their children over for a closer look, testing Olly's ability to handle crowds, ambient noise, and the kind of casual, fragmented queries that transit robots would face daily.
