The National University Health System (NUHS) has rolled out a cluster-wide AI in Pharmacy platform (NCAIP) that brings together four artificial intelligence tools designed to automate the most time-consuming parts of a pharmacist's workflow, from medication reconciliation to prescription triage.

NUHS expects the platform to deliver up to S million in annual savings once fully deployed across its hospital network. At the heart of the announcement is MedTriage, the first tool to go live, which is projected to save 94 working hours per week — equivalent to roughly S29,690 in annual cost savings in its initial phase alone. The health system's pharmacists currently spend over 350 hours weekly on medication reconciliation, 190 hours on routine prescription triage and counselling, and 310 hours on inpatient medication verification — numbers that underscore the administrative burden faced by clinical staff in Singapore's public hospitals.

The platform integrates and analyses data from multiple sources to provide a unified view of each patient, addressing a long-standing challenge in public healthcare: fragmented patient information across departments and systems. NCAIP could also reduce in-person dispensing by up to 20%, allowing pharmacists to prioritise patients who actually require face-to-face assistance or counselling rather than spending most of their time processing routine prescriptions.

The NCAIP launch comes as Singapore's healthcare system faces mounting pressure from an ageing population and rising chronic disease prevalence. AI-driven automation in hospital pharmacies is a proven lever for addressing these challenges — similar deployments at Changi General Hospital and Singapore General Hospital have demonstrated that freeing pharmacists from administrative work directly improves patient counselling quality and medication safety outcomes. What makes NCAIP notable is its multi-tool, cluster-wide approach: rather than a single-point solution, NUHS is building a platform that can host additional pharmacy AI tools over time, suggesting a longer-term commitment to AI-driven pharmacy operations.
