NUS Launches Southeast Asia's First Conversational AI Platform for Academic Research

The National University of Singapore unveiled AI Sense Maker, a conversational AI research platform that lets students and academics search digitised materials using natural language instead of keywords. Launching August 20 with 150,000 digitised materials from ScholarBank research papers and rare Special Collections, it is the first such deployment at a Southeast Asian university.

University research has a discovery problem — not a shortage of information, but a shortage of tools to make sense of it. The National University of Singapore's answer, launching next month, is a conversational AI platform that lets students ask questions in plain language and get answers drawn from the institution's vast digitised collections.
AI Sense Maker (ASM) was developed jointly by NUS Libraries and NUS Information Technology. Built on OpenAI's large language model, the platform uses semantic search rather than keyword matching — meaning it understands the intent behind a question and can surface relevant results even when the terminology doesn't match exactly. It also generates topic summaries, related concepts, curated references, and interactive knowledge graphs to help students navigate research material more efficiently.
The platform will go live on August 20 with an initial foundation of 150,000 digitised materials drawn from two sources: ScholarBank, NUS's repository of research papers, and Digital Gems, the library's ongoing initiative to digitise its Special Collections of rare books and primary sources. NUS has emphasised that its collections will focus on Southeast Asia, including books dating back to the 17th century held in the BookBridge at NUS Central Library.
Associate Professor Natalie Pang, university librarian at NUS, described ASM as a tool designed to help people "make sense of information, not simply find it." The aim, she said, is to connect ideas across trusted sources so that the platform becomes a starting point for deeper inquiry rather than a replacement for critical thinking. "It helps people ask better questions, discover new connections and generate fresh insights," she said.
