Singapore's universities have spent the past year deciding what AI should and shouldn't change about how they teach. Singapore Management University's answer, unveiled on Tuesday, is a curriculum where students first prove they can think without AI — and then learn to build with it.

The new suite of courses, launching with the academic year that starts on 17 August, treats fluency with the technology as table stakes rather than the point of an education.
The centrepiece is SMU's AI in Education Strategy, endorsed by its Board of Trustees in February, which will reshape undergraduate education from AY2027/28 around three commitments: protecting core competencies such as independent reasoning, developing the ability to apply AI responsibly and effectively, and strengthening the human capabilities — judgement, ethics, collaboration, creativity — that machines don't have. Every student gets complimentary access to Gemini Education Plus, so AI fluency doesn't depend on what anyone can afford. New courses span the whole university: accounting students build AI agents (ACCT439), law students study the law of emerging technologies including AI and cryptocurrency (LAW4092), and software engineering students learn AI-driven development (SE201).
The most industry-connected piece is the Financial Services AI Immersion Programme (IS4002), a 13-week SMU-X course under the Young Talent Programme – AI in Finance announced by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong in May. Built with the Institute of Banking & Finance and MAS, and backed by AWS, Bloomberg and more than 20 financial institutions including JPMorgan, DBS and Prudential, it runs a two-week bootcamp followed by coursework and internships — a direct pipeline from lecture hall to the trading floor, aimed at Year 2 to 4 students across Singapore, not just SMU's own.
The strategy is a deliberate counterweight to the rush to bolt AI onto every syllabus. SMU's Vice Provost for Education Strategies, Professor Venky Shankararaman, argues fluency can be taught quickly, while judgement, creativity and understanding of the people a graduate serves take far longer. That framing echoes a wider debate in Singapore's education system — from NUS and NTU's AI research labs to SkillsFuture's retraining push — about whether AI should make learning easier or make graduates more valuable than the technology itself.
Why it matters for Singapore: As AI reshapes the financial hub's workforce, the country's talent pipeline is only as strong as what universities teach. SMU's insistence that graduates first demonstrate competence independent of AI — then layer on fluency — gives employers a clearer signal about what a degree means in an AI-enabled world. With the first cohort starting next week, this is also a live experiment for how Singapore's other universities might structure their own AI-era curricula.
