Tata Communications is pouring US$152 million into expanding subsea cable capacity between India and Singapore, adding 98 Tbps of additional traffic capacity to meet surging demand driven by AI workloads. The investment covers two cable systems: one integrating a new Mumbai-to-Singapore route and a second connecting Chennai to Singapore that is expected to be ready for service by the fourth quarter of 2029.

The India-Singapore subsea corridor is fast becoming one of the world's most important digital arteries, supporting enterprise, cloud, and hyperscaler traffic between two of Asia's largest tech hubs. Tata Communications' existing Tata Global Network already spans over 500,000 kilometres of subsea fibre and 200,000 kilometres of terrestrial fibre. Chief technology officer Genius Wong cited "accelerating global demand for digital and AI-driven services" as the primary driver for the investment, noting that the expanded capacity will also strengthen Tata's Izo connectivity solutions for on-demand provisioning.

This expansion builds on the TGN-IA2 submarine cable announced last year, which connects Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore as part of the Asia Direct Cable system. Singapore is increasingly positioning itself as Southeast Asia's connectivity hub, with submarine cable landings in the country expected to double under a national blueprint to stay ahead digitally. Every new cable landing strengthens the Republic's appeal as a regional data centre and cloud hub — sectors that are themselves growing rapidly to meet AI infrastructure demand.

Why it matters for Singapore: Subsea cable capacity is the physical backbone of the AI economy. Every large language model training run, every cloud API call, and every data centre interconnection depends on this infrastructure. Singapore's ability to attract these investments — and they keep coming — directly underpins its ambition to be Southeast Asia's AI hub. More capacity means lower latency, better cloud service economics, and stronger connectivity to global AI supply chains, making Singapore an even more attractive destination for AI infrastructure investment.
