GIC is going deeper into the AI infrastructure play. The Singapore sovereign wealth fund has joined Anthropic and Macquarie Asset Management in a strategic partnership to build and own data centres at scale for the Claude developer, in a deal that turns the AI compute shortage into a long-duration investment thesis.
The three parties announced on Monday the creation of Theseus Infrastructure, a new platform to develop, operate and lease data centre capacity to Anthropic under long-term agreements. Each facility will be purpose-built for Anthropic's growing compute needs, with the United States as the initial focus and Anthropic as anchor tenant. Funds managed by Macquarie Asset Management and GIC will own the platform and fund the majority of the equity for each project. Anthropic, for its part, has committed to covering electricity price increases that its sites might otherwise impose on consumers, honouring a pledge it made earlier this year.
The deal is the latest chapter in GIC's escalating bet on AI. The fund has invested in Anthropic three times in the past year, and it has described the "critical bottlenecks" of AI's rapid development — power, land, and compute infrastructure — as opportunities for long-term investors rather than risks to avoid. Pairing GIC's global infrastructure experience with Macquarie's track record in developing and financing digital infrastructure gives Anthropic a capital pipeline that pure cloud providers struggle to match.
For the AI industry, this is a template: model makers partnering with patient, institutional capital to secure dedicated compute, instead of renting capacity in crowded cloud queues. The thousands of construction jobs and permanent operational roles the venture expects to create also give the project a political economy dimension that pure data-centre leasing deals rarely have.
Why it matters for Singapore: This is Singapore's sovereign fund helping bankroll the physical backbone of frontier AI — a strategic positioning play that extends far beyond returns. Through GIC, Singapore gains a seat at the table in how Western AI capacity gets built, and the deal deepens the city-state's ties to Anthropic, whose Claude models are already widely used across Singapore's startups and enterprises. It also signals that GIC sees AI infrastructure, not just AI equity, as a core allocation for the coming decade.
