The commitment came at the Singapore-Thailand Leaders' Retreat in Bangkok on September 2, where both leaders discussed expanding collaboration across trade, investment, semiconductors, and AI.
The retreat, held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, also produced an MOU to enhance social sector collaboration and addressed regional challenges including Myanmar's situation and the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. With Singapore chairing ASEAN in 2027 and Thailand following in 2028, the two countries are positioning themselves to shape the regional AI governance and adoption agenda for the next two years — a rare window of coordinated influence.
The AI dimension of the bilateral relationship is significant because Thailand has been investing heavily in its own digital transformation, while Singapore has the policy frameworks and research institutions to support regional AI capacity building. Joint initiatives could include cross-border data governance, shared AI training programmes, and coordinated approaches to AI regulation across the bloc.
