Semiconductor manufacturing has quietly become one of Singapore's most important AI stories — and it is a jobs story as much as a chips story. The city-state already produces roughly one in ten chips globally, and the firms that make the machines that make those chips are now racing to hire. The latest is Lam Research, which confirmed plans to add about 200 positions in Singapore this year, nearly 90 per cent of them specialised engineering and technical roles tied to AI-driven demand for advanced chips.

The Fremont, California-based equipment maker — a three-decade veteran of Singapore's ecosystem — said the new hires will work across some of the hardest problems in modern chipmaking: high bandwidth memory, 2.5D and 3D integration, silicon photonics and co-packaged optics. Most of the roles are intended for local hires, and the company framed the expansion as a deepening of its collaboration with customers across the region and with local universities including NTU, NUS and SIT. "The demand for deep engineering talent has never been greater," said Andrew Goh, Lam's corporate vice-president and general manager for South-east Asia.

Lam is far from alone. Micron, Applied Materials and UMC have all poured fresh investment into their Singapore operations as AI workloads drive demand for advanced packaging and memory. The pattern is consistent: as data-centre buildouts scale, the equipment and materials layer of the chip supply chain — much of it anchored in Singapore — grows with it. Singapore now accounts for about one-fifth of global semiconductor equipment production, and the industry contributes close to 6 per cent of GDP while employing more than 35,000 people.

For Singapore's workforce, this is a meaningful signal about where the value sits in the AI economy. The roles being created here are not generic software jobs; they are deep-engineering positions in packaging, photonics and memory — exactly the disciplines that become more valuable as AI chips hit physical limits. It also reinforces a longer-term bet: that Singapore's semiconductor niche is shifting up the value chain, from fabrication support toward the advanced packaging and interconnects that determine how fast AI models can actually run.

Why it matters for Singapore: Every chip-equipment expansion like this deepens the moat around Singapore's semiconductor cluster at a moment when AI demand is reshaping the global supply chain. The local-hire emphasis matters too — it means the AI boom translates into skilled jobs for Singaporeans rather than just added capacity, and it keeps the university pipeline plugged directly into the industry's most demanding technical work. For a country that has bet heavily on being indispensable to AI infrastructure, Lam's 200 roles are another brick in that foundation.
