Singapore's economic momentum still flows through technology, and the central bank sees that holding even as the pace slackens. The Monetary Authority of Singapore gave that reading on Wednesday (Oct 14), pointing to a gentler but still outsized contribution from tech-linked industries.

MAS, the institution that steers the city-state's monetary policy, shared the view this week. For several years Singapore has leaned hard on digital, data and AI-adjacent activity to lift output, and officials do not appear to expect that reliance to loosen anytime soon.

What changes is the tempo: activity across tech-facing segments is tipped to ease rather than accelerate. Despite that cooling, the central bank still treats these industries as the single biggest force behind headline expansion. In short, slower does not mean sidelined.

For businesses, the signal concerns texture more than direction. A reduced pace points to a sector shifting from breakneck conditions toward something more durable, which typically translates into steadier hiring and capital spending rather than the feverish scramble of recent cycles. That is a healthier pattern, though it offers less of the euphoria markets have grown used to.

Why it matters for Singapore: A small, open economy has thin buffers, so having tech remain the primary engine buys breathing room while other clusters mature. Should that engine falter more than anticipated, the growth arithmetic becomes considerably harder. Right now the AI wave is doing much of the heavy lifting.
