Singapore's manufacturing sector grew for the 11th consecutive month in June, with the purchasing managers' index rising 0.3 points to 51.3 — the highest reading since November 2018. Data from the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management, reported by The Business Times on July 2, showed factory activity supported primarily by AI-related semiconductor demand.

A PMI reading above 50 indicates expansion. The electronics sector led the charge, with its PMI climbing to 51.6 as new orders, output, and employment all registered growth. The broader manufacturing expansion was underpinned by sustained global demand for AI chips and advanced semiconductor components, which form a critical part of Singapore's export profile.

Singapore's electronics manufacturing cluster, which includes major players like Micron, GlobalFoundries, and Applied Materials, has been a direct beneficiary of the global AI infrastructure buildout. The island-state produces approximately 10% of the world's semiconductors and an even larger share of advanced chipmaking equipment, making its factory activity a bellwether for AI-related industrial demand across Asia.

The PMI data aligns with broader economic momentum. Singapore's GDP grew 6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, and major research houses have been upgrading their full-year forecasts, citing sustained AI investment as a key growth driver. The electronics PMI's resilience suggests the AI-driven manufacturing cycle still has room to run.

Why it matters for Singapore: The PMI reading confirms that AI hardware demand remains the primary engine of Singapore's manufacturing growth. As the global AI infrastructure cycle matures, Singapore's role as a critical semiconductor manufacturing and equipment hub positions it to capture sustained upside through at least the third quarter of 2026.
