Singapore's push to become Asia's premier carbon hub runs into a practical problem: most small and mid-sized businesses here still measure their sustainability footprint the old way — spreadsheets, manual audits, and estimates. That gap between ambition and measurement is exactly where the city-state's AI ecosystem keeps finding work, and the latest collaboration to attack it pairs an Indian IIoT specialist with one of Singapore's oldest polytechnics.

ThinkPalm Technologies, a product engineering firm with 15 years in industrial internet of things and digital sustainability, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) to co-develop AI-driven IIoT solutions for sustainability measurement among Singapore's SMEs and start-ups. The deal, announced August 10, combines SP's applied-technology education expertise with ThinkPalm's NetvirE AI-powered IIoT platform, and is expected to support future sustainability initiatives across the local business community.

The collaboration has a talent pipeline baked in. SP students will get exposure to sensor design through joint projects, plus internship opportunities at ThinkPalm's offices in Kochi, Trivandrum and Chennai — a concrete bridge between classroom learning and the fast-growing field of industrial sustainability tech. SP has also invited ThinkPalm to co-develop a curriculum framework centred on industry projects, and the company has joined SP's industry partner network.

The timing makes sense. Businesses in Singapore face rising pressure from customers, financiers and regulators to report emissions and resource use accurately, and AI-driven IIoT is one of the few approaches that can make that measurement continuous rather than episodic. For ThinkPalm, the MOU opens a door into Southeast Asia's most active market for smart-nation infrastructure; for SP, it strengthens a leadership position in AI-driven industrial adoption that the polytechnic has been building through initiatives like its Industrial AI framework.

Why it matters for Singapore: If Singapore's carbon-hub ambitions are to hold up, the hundreds of thousands of SMEs that make up the backbone of the economy need affordable ways to measure what they emit and consume. Partnerships like this one — a mid-sized foreign tech firm, a local polytechnic, and a shared curriculum — are how that measurement capability gets built and taught at scale. It also keeps SP students at the front of a skills wave that combines AI, sensors and sustainability, a combination Singapore will need more of as reporting mandates tighten.
