Singapore's technology relationship with Vietnam has long run through the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks, a model that has anchored manufacturing and services for decades. As both governments push innovation agendas, the two countries are signalling that the next phase of that partnership should be built around artificial intelligence, semiconductors and high-tech talent rather than factory floors alone.
Vietnamese research figures and officials laid out the case this week for broadening ties, pointing to the VSIP model's success as a springboard into digital transformation, green energy and smart logistics. They argued Singapore's strengths — long-term R&D investment, an open innovation ecosystem linking research institutes, universities and business, and transparent rules for technology commercialisation — complement Vietnam's young population, deep STEM talent pool and rare-earth resources. Quoted experts included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luu Anh Tuan of NTU's College of Computing and Data Science and a deputy head at A*STAR's Advanced Optical Technology department.
The timing is notable. Singapore is deepening a next-generation semiconductor strategy as AI reshapes demand, while Vietnam positions itself within global supply-chain diversification. Both are courting the same multinationals and talent, which makes structured cooperation — rather than head-to-head competition — the more likely path.
