Singapore's maritime sector has spent the last few years turning itself into an AI proving ground, and the latest entrant into that ecosystem comes from halfway across the Indian Ocean. An IIT Madras-incubated startup called Dtyle.AI has been selected for the PIER71 Smart Port Challenge 2026 Accelerate Programme in Singapore — one of just two Indian startups, and the only one from Tamil Nadu, in a cohort drawn from around 12 countries.

The 10-week programme, which runs from September 7 to November 12, is backed by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NUS Enterprise. PIER71 is the channel through which shipping companies and port authorities submit real operational problems for startups to solve, and this year Dtyle.AI pitched across three areas: autonomous vessel safety monitoring, privacy-preserving crew safety monitoring, and AI-powered smart port surveillance.

The company, founded in February 2025, builds computer-vision systems that run on edge devices rather than the cloud — a deliberate choice for vessels where internet is limited or absent, bandwidth is low, and radar interference is constant. Its pitch is that conventional fire alarms are reactive, while vision models can catch problems earlier: in a pilot on an oil tanker at Chennai Port, the system detected smoke in 13 milliseconds. The same platform aggregates feeds from thousands of surveillance cameras into a single dashboard for port operators, flagging unauthorised access and stowaways, and can track safety compliance across up to 100 ships from one office.

The timing is no accident. Large container ships and oil tankers run with crews of just 20-25, making round-the-clock manual monitoring impossible, and lithium-ion battery fires — increasingly common with the rise of electric vehicles in cargo — can reach nearly 1,000 degrees Celsius within seconds, leaving crews five to six minutes to isolate the source. Data on how quickly crews acknowledge safety alerts could also help shipping lines demonstrate stronger risk management and negotiate lower insurance premiums, a commercial angle that makes maritime AI attractive beyond safety compliance.

Why it matters for Singapore: PIER71 is a deliberate pipeline for importing maritime technology into Singapore's ecosystem, and Dtyle.AI is the second IIT Madras-incubated startup to enter it after underwater robotics firm Planys Technologies. Each cohort gives Singapore's port authority and shipping lines early access to emerging AI tools, and it reinforces the city-state's position as a testbed where foreign startups validate solutions in real operating conditions. With the 10-week programme ending just ahead of the year-end maritime industry calendar, the pilots that emerge from this cohort will be worth watching as signals of where smart port technology is heading.
